Paul Klee : Painted Songs
"One eye sees, the other feels"

About Paul Klee : Painted Songs
Paul Klee : Painted Songs is an ongoing series of interdisciplinary chamber works inspired by the visual art of Paul Klee. The series began in 2011 as a composition assignment from my first composition teacher, Luke Dahn, who asked all of his students to compose a work for clarinet and piano inspired by the iconic "Twittering Machine." Over the years, I have added to the series, continuing to draw on the wealth of inspiration from Klee's images, which are filled with musical references, textures, colors, and symbols that closely link musical concepts with Klee's philosophy of visual art. To me, these pieces are musical settings of visual poetry, hence "painted songs." What continues to fascinate me about Klee is both the diversity and consistency of his total body of work. Throughout his vast career, certain ideas continue to resurface and find new applications. In this spirit, Paul Klee: Painted Songs continues to expand, ever exploring the poetry of his work through musical interpretation.
Performing Paul Klee : Painted Songs
Each piece within Paul Klee : Painted Songs can be performed separately and is considered an independent, free-standing musical work. But, performers are encouraged to re-contextualize these pieces into "galleries." Like a curator of an art gallery, performers can combine these works
in any order or number, interpolate them with other works by other composers, or arrange them for different instrumental forces. Some pieces are more flexible than others, but the full work is designed to be self-referential and open to interpretation. As the series grows larger, I have aided
"curators" by arranging and composing my own "galleries," multi-movement works that were conceived together. But even these collections can be rearranged and will evolve as more "painted songs" are added to the series and developed in collaboration with performers.

Which "songs" are completed?
Currently, around fifty works are completed and over a hundred works are in progress or planned. A few of the "galleries" are listed below and individual movements with orange links are completed and available for purchase. If you are interested in performing one of these completed galleries, go to the Galleries page, or contact me directly if you are interested in an incomplete gallery or want to create a custom gallery.
Why list unfinished works?
To me, even conceptualized works are "in progress" because though they may be unfinished, they are still "compositions" in my head. If you are interested in any of the 165 works in this series, even those that are listed as unfinished, let me know! I would be thrilled to complete them in collaboration with your ensemble! Also, if you find a painting by Paul Klee and want to commission a new "painted song," please contact me directly.
Why "only" 165?
This is the number of squares in “Ancient Sound,” the last planned work in the series. In a way, it represents the entire series in all its facets. Each square is like its own canvas – its own room of the gallery – its own universe – but is connected to the rest through color, harmony, rhythm, and form – and by the eye of the artist. “Ancient Sound” began near the beginning of the project in 2011, but early drafts for bass guitar were discarded. Later (in 2018), it was imagined as an abstract, open score, indeterminate work as No. 50, then No. 80, then No. 100, and finally No. 165. Its position as the final painting is also ironic – because its indeterminate nature prompts endless variations and is more of a launchpad into the unknown than a final testament. At the time of its completion, around 25 other works were complete and 88 were planned. The ambitious goal of completing 165 settings in the full series is daunting, but now that there is a goal, one can work from both ends without worrying about burying this experimental ideal in the middle of the catalogue. Other experimental works (No. 155 through 165) are also planned, but there are plenty of remaining slots for whatever comes next! If I surpass my goal of 165, so be it! Note: Some of the squares in "Ancient Sound" could be divided further, depending on the lighting or an individual's perception of color! 165 is how many squares I counted and used as the basis for my musical setting.
